On 29 August 2023, a court in Mumbai refused to grant pre-arrest bail to the city’s former mayor, who is currently investigated on grounds of fraud in a scheme to purchase body bags for COVID-19 victims using public money.
The court pointed out that the accusations concern a failure in protecting the interests of a public body and implied a violation of trust with criminally relevant consequences. Therefore, the bail was denied, making the former mayor still potentially subjected to arrest.
