On 23 May 2022, the Galician High Court held that a journalist had the right to access the data about the number of COVID-19 contagions and deaths in individual private care homes of the region (judgment n°198/2022 of the 3rd chamber of the administrative section).

The journalist had requested access to this information for the period between 1 March and 30 April 2020, at the outset of the pandemic. The court found that the right to information should prevail over other rights, such as the right to data protection, privacy, honor, etc., since the information at stake is of general interest. The court concluded that society should be able to assess the pandemic’s crisis management, for which it is indispensable to have access to that information.
