In a judgment of 9 May 2022, the Taipei High Court sentenced a Facebook user to three months in jail for violating the special law for the prevention, relief, and revitalization measures for severe pneumonia with new pathogens, for spreading false information on the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in Taiwan in a Facebook group of which he was the administrator, as well as incorrect information on the prevention of the disease.

After Facebook suspended his account, the user opened over 20 accounts under a false name to continue publishing.

According to the Tribunal, these actions were motivated to intentionally support Taiwanese autonomist propaganda against China. The man was also convicted of the crime of "forgery" for spreading unfounded news such as the death of the former President due to COVID-19.

The jail sentence was suspended for two years and can be converted into a fine.
